Athletic Council Minutes

October 1, 2003

The Athletic Council meeting was called to order at 8:45.  Armijo -- Jay Dahl.  Davis -- David Blackwell.  Napa -- Scott Kostecka.  Vacaville --Fred Jones and Gail McNally.  Vintage--Maryanne Christofferson.  Wood--Bill Ewing.

I. Fall Sports

A. Football

1.     Start of League 2 weeks away.

2.     Fred Reviewed the Section play-off meeting.  MEL will get only 2 play-off berths.

3.     Scott discussed the doctor in attendance issue that Napa has had to deal with at recent games.  CIF rules state that the home school ̉shall endeavor to have a doctor in attendance at the start of the game.  If no doctor is in attendance, the home school may state to officials that the game shall proceed.

B. Volleyball

1.     New rally scoring is a definite improvement to the game.

C. Soccer

1.     Coaches feel that the officials are using the yellow and red card too often.
2.     ADs are reminded to check with their soccer coach for names and numbers of red-carded players as the soccer officials are sending the wrong numbers to schools.

D. Tennis

1.     The tennis meeting had 2 coaches attend.
2.     Seeding for MEL tournament was discussed.  The seeded players need to play in 10 league matches.
3.     The top 4 teams are to bring 3 singles/doubles.  5th and 6th place teams bring 2 each.
4.     MEL tourney is at Vintage High November 7th and 8th.
5.     MEL to host Section individual at Vintage High November 13th and 14th.
6.     Maryanne will check with the Section about hiring a referee for Section matches.

E. Water Polo

1.     David handed out results of the first half of League.

F. Golf

1.     League tourney will be Thursday, October 23rd at 11 AM at Paradise Valley.

G. Cross Country

1.     Coaches are suggesting doing more center meets and fewer duals.
2.     There was no pre-season coaches meeting.II. 

II. Winter Sports

A. Basketball

1.     Coaches meeting October 14 at Armijo High.

B. Wrestling

1.     Coaches meeting October 29th Room 60 Vacaville High at 6 PM.
2.     February 7th League Individual Tournament.  Possibility of Napa hosting.
3.     Suggestion is to hold Frosh/Soph tourney on the same day as Varsity Individual.  To avoid the 45 minutes rest delay, the Fr/Soph could be interspersed with Varsity.
4.     Dual tourney no longer in existence.
5.     Seeding will be covered at the Coaches meeting.
6.     Novice tournament will be November 26th with SCAC.  Place and time TBA.III.

III. Spring Sports

A. Swimming

1.     David Blackwell handed out a schedule with a single round robin.
2.     League will need to determine a site for the MEL Diving and Swimming.

B. Baseball

Maryanne handed out 3 proposals for baseball
1.     Schedule A  coaches choice with 2 weeks off
2.     Schedule B  compromise with bye dates.  This schedule includes some Wednesday games.  Maryanne will check with officials to see if that presents a problem.
3.     Schedule C  Triple round robin that league is using for other sports.

D. Golf

1.     Coaches meeting October 15th at Don Trollinger's house.

E. Track

1.     Bill and Mike Papadopoulos will work on the schedule when football is over.

F. Softball, Soccer, Golf, Badminton.

1.     Proposed schedules handed out.

2.    All A.D.s are asked to review schedules with the appropriate coach and school administrator.

3.   We will be voting on all available Spring Schedules at the Board of Managers Meeting October 15th.

IV. Web Update

1.     Results from League contests are not being supplied to the commissioner.  Most of the updating of League standing are with the use of the "Vacaville Reporter".
2.     The Constitution is on the web with individual areas listed at the top.  Click on the area or sport and the computer will go directly to that sport.
3.     We still need the school directory from Armijo, Vacaville and Vintage.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:10.
