Athletic Council

June 1, 2005

Minutes

 

The meeting was called to order at 11:30 a.m.  All Athletic Directors were in attendance.  Also in attendance were future Athletic Directors Erik Zaidel (Vintage) and Bob Baclig (Vacaville).

 

I.    Spring Sport

A.  Badminton

1.  The League tournament hosted by Armijo went very well.  Davis High will host the tournament in 2006.

2.  At the Section tournament, MEL had a 4th place single and 5th & 6th place doubles.

B.  Baseball Ð MaryAnne handed out a corrected baseball schedule.

C.  Golf

1.  Jay handed out the final boys and girls golf schedules.

2.  The League tournament at Hiddenbrook went well.

3.  MEL will host central SubSections for boys Golf in 2006.

D.  Girls Soccer

1.  Scott reported that the girls coaches are in agreement with the proposed schedule for 2006.

2.  The girls coaches also want to keep the option open to adjust the combined scoring of League dual contests and League mini-tourney to determine the League champion.

E.  Softball

1.  Patrick commended the softball coaches for a very friendly, professional, and organized All League selection meeting.

2.  Vacaville and Armijo represented the MEL at Sections.  Vacaville was ultimately the Division I Section Champion.

F.  Swimming and Diving

1.  Patrick again commended the Vintage coach and volunteer staff for the running of the League championship.

2.  Davis girls were the Division I Section Champions and the boys placed 3rd at the Section meet.

G.  Tennis

1.  MaryAnne reported that the League tournament basically ran fine.

2.  A discussion occurred suggesting that all coaches (boys and girls) meet before Fall tennis to discuss how to conduct the ÒDrawÓ for the League tournament.

3.  Additionally, the coaches need to determine if All League should be ONLY the top 2 singles and top 2 doubles because these are the only players to advance to Sections.

4.  Erik will need to schedule a pre-season meeting early in September to discuss the above item.

5.  MaryAnne also handed out boys tennis schedule for 2006.

H.  Track

1.  Bill commended all the track coaches for the Òspirit of cooperationÓ at the League J.V. and Varsity meets.

2.  MEL has a number of athletes that qualified for the State meet.

II         Fall Sports

A.  Volleyball

1.  Scott questioned whether the Section would be using the ÒLiberoÓ position next year in the Section tournament.  Joan will contact John Williams for clarification and send the response to Scott.

2.  Scott stated that the ÒFroshÓ schedule will be very similar to this yearÕs schedule.  Final schedule will be drawn up in the Fall.  Armijo will not field a Frosh team.

B.  Football  Patrick handed out the completed Davis schedule.

C.  Tennis Ð New Coaches

1.  Armijo Ð Greg Davis (Boys and Girls)

2.  Vacaville Ð Pat Parker

D. Soccer New Coach

1.  Vacaville Ð Brian Davis

E.  Golf  New Coach

1.  Davis   --  There will be a new coach.  Name to be announced at a later date.

III        Winter Sports

A.  Wrestling Ð New Coach

1.  Vacaville  Co-Coaches  Clint Birch and Adam Wight

IV        School of the Year

A.  Joan handed out the printout of School of the Year  points.

B.  Congratulations to Davis High, the MEL 2004 Ð 2005 School of the Year recipient.

V         Football Camp

A.  Vacaville has submitted the camp form.

B.  Wood and Davis indicated that they will also be sending a form ASAP.

VI        Other

A.  Web Site

1.  The Summer opening screen is a ÒLogoÓ page.  The sport picture pages will return during the appropriate season.

2.  The constitution and by-laws have been re-organized on the site to ease printing of specific sports.

B.  Bob Baclig was introduced as the new Girls Athletic Director for Vacaville High School.  Bob is replacing Gail McNally.

C.   League Reps.

Joan asked for League reps for the Section.  AD in charge of sport will be listed for any sport without a ÒcoachÓ rep.

D.  Banners

1.  We had samples of the ÒfeltÓ and the ÒvinylÓ banners from Neff.

2.  Questions concerning vinyl:

a.  Grommets

b.  One piece construction instead of 2 pieces.

c.  Screen print instead of ÒheatÓ lettering.

3.  Joan will meet with Larry Roush June 22nd to discuss the concerns.

E.  Miscellaneous

1.  Armijo will play their girls soccer at 5 and 7 p.m. next year.

2.  Vacaville will play boys soccer at 3:30 and 5:00 p.m. at Vacaville High rather than at Horse Creek Park.

F.  Meetings Dates

1.  Athletic Council will meet September 1st at 3-Oaks Community Center at 8:30 a.m.

2.  Board of Managers will meet September 21st at Armijo High Library at 8:30 a.m.
