Athletic Council

3-Oaks Community Center

May 4, 2005

 

Commissioner Joan Mumaugh called the meeting to order at 8:37 a.m..

 

Present:  All athletic directors were in attendance.  Maryanne introduced Erik Zaidel, the Vintage Athletic Director starting fall, 2005.

 

I           Spring Sports

A.  Badminton

1.  Gail handed out information for the seeding meeting, May 12th.

2.  The MEL will send 4 singles players and 4 doubles teams to Sections
at Tokay High School.

B.  Baseball Ð Maryanne will bring a revised baseball schedule to the June 1st meeting.

C.  Golf

1.  Each school reminded of $120 entry fee for the League Tournament at Hiddenbrook.

2.  Don Trollinger has secured Cypress Lakes at 2:00 May 6th if the League Tournament is rained out May 5th.

D.  Soccer

1.   Scott handed out information for the May 9th post-season meeting.

2.   Scott will review the proposed 2006 schedule with the coaches at the May 9th meeting.

E.   Softball

1.  Sections start May 21st.  MEL will send two teams to Sections.

2.   The double first-base may not be mandated for next year.


F.   Swimming / Diving

1.  Section Diving is May 5, 6, 7 at Johansen High School.

2.   Section Swimming is May 12, 13, 14 at Tokay High School

3.   Vintage swim coach and volunteers are to be commended for hosting the League Meet.  Everyone agreed that the event was well organized with lots of parent help.

G.  Boys Tennis

1.   Seeding meeting is 8:00 a.m. May 5th rain or shine.

2.  Reminder:  Top 4 teams each bring 3 singles players and 3 doubles teams.

H.  Track

1.   J.V. culminating meet is Friday, May 6th.

2.  Entries for the Varsity League Meet are due Friday, May 6th.  Send an email with entries to Bill Ewing.  Also, bring a hard copy of entries to the J.V. meet on Friday.

3.   Monday, May 9th there will be a League meeting 6:00 p.m. at Vacaville High.

4.   Varsity meet May 11th and 13th.  All entrants must be checked in by the published/announced check-in time.  Failure to check-in on time will result in disqualification.

II         Fall Sport --  Wood will have a new volleyball coach next year:  Heather Leonard.

III        Winter Sports

A.  Vacaville will have new co-coaches for wrestling next year:  Clint Birch and Adam Wight.

B.  Davis will have a new wrestling coach, girls golf coach and girls basketball coach.

IV        Schedules Ð Reminder that girls soccer, boys tennis and track need to be ready for the Athletic Council no later than September 1, 2005.


V         Other

A.  Girls Golf

1.   SCAC has requested to be added to MEL schedule for competition purposes.

2.  Suggest that SCAC be considered for non-league contests by each school; as either a single match or home-and-home.

B.  ASEP

1.   The Board of Managers at the Section passed the ÒCoaching TrainingÓ class that requires each coach to be certified by December 2008.

2.   Bill Ewing explained what the class covers.  This is an 8-hour in-class program with 4 additional self-study hours.

3.   Currently the cost is $65 per coach plus $550 for the trainer.

C.  Football Camp Form

1.   Joan handed out the ÒrequiredÓ form if a school plans to participate in a team camp during the summer.

2.   The signed form is due to Joan by June 3, 2005.

D.  Standings Ð Joan reminded everyone to forward via email, the final League standing and the All League recipients for the each of the Spring sports.

E.   Wrestling Weight Management

1.   Joan handed out the information from the Section regarding this issue.

2.   At this time it appears that SacJoaquin will institute the program on a trial basis for 2005 Ð 2006.

3.   The program is mandated by the National Federation of High School Sports for the school year 2006 Ð 2007.

F.   Officials

1.   Joan handed out a copy of a letter from the football officials association requesting that Frosh games use 4 officials instead of 3.

2.   The MEL agrees with the reasoning listed for the personnel increase, although cost may be an issue.

G.  Banners

1.   Larry Rouss (Neff) will stop by each school with a sample of the new banners.

2.   We will need to decide on June 1st which banner the League will use so the order can be placed during the summer.

H.  Calendar Ð Joan handed out a calendar of meeting dates for 2005 Ð 2006.


I.    Athletic Questions

1.   Scott questioned how each school dealt with athletes out of class for competition.  Next year, Napa High will not have an athletic period.

2.   Should the League review starting times to address the issue of students missing class.

J.   The next meeting will be June 1st at a place and time to be determined.
